Natural Emulsifiers

If you’ve been shopping for natural skincare products, you’ve probably stumbled across the term emulsifiers. Maybe you’ve never really known what that means, so we’re going to break down for you what they exactly are and why they are needed in your skincare products. As a bit of a forewarning: there is some chemistry involved, so don’t be too scared off by that when reading on.

Why do we need emulsifiers:

Many skincare products have oil-based ingredients in them, like coconut oil for example. They may also include water in their product or other liquids. Water and oil famously don’t mix well. They separate. This is a problem, as you don’t want a lotion or skincare product where the oil is separated from the water, and you have a two layer-ed product. Ick!

This is where emulsifiers come in. Emulsifiers are able to bind to both oil and water, creating a sort of partnership between the two. Think of an emulsifier as the mediator between two opposing parties, but in terms of skincare.

Natural emulsifiers we use:

Olivem 1000 (Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate)

We know this sounds more like a vacuum cleaner than a skincare ingredient, but bear with us! This ingredient is often used by skincare brands, because it knows it’s widely accepted and approved by Ecocert. As its name indicates, the ingredient is derived from olives. This is a great addition to anti-aging creams as it helps bind ingredients together to deliver a moisturizing and creamy effect, while being hypoallergenic.

Eco Gel (Lysolecithin, Sclerotium Gum, Xanthan Gum, Pullulan)

COSMOS approved natural origin gelling-emulsifying agent able to create natural light gel-creams.The benefit of this emulsifier is that it’s completely plant-derived. Used often with highly oil-based skincare products, it uses a derivative of wheat and rapeseed to bind ingredients together.

SucraGel (Glycerin & Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride & Aqua & Sucrose Laurate & Sucrose Stearate)

Sucrose based complete natural oil thickening agent, allows creating emulsions without heating process which preserves best natural oils sensitive components. 100% natural origin and COSMOS-approved for natural skincare. At Potion Organic we use this emulsifier to create our gel-to-milk cleansers, exfoliating scrubs and serums. This thickener is safe for the environment and 100% biodegradable.
